The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard received a notification yesterday from a vessel with engine failure. There were four persons on board. The craft, the ‘Sandy’ was approximately 3,5 nautical miles west of St. Maarten.

The Dash-8 maritime patrol aircraft of the Coast Guard and the Royal Netherlands Navy ship, the HNLMS Van Amstel which at the present time is patrolling for the Coast Guard and currently in the area, were immediately directed towards the ‘Sandy’. In a very short time, the vessel was found. After several attempts to try to fix the engine, it was decided to tow the boat to Marigot on the French side of St. Maarten

The rescue action was coordinated with the Rescue and Coordination Center (RCC) Fort-de-France. RCC Fort-de-France is responsible for coordination of all SAR around the Windward islands and works closely together with assets of the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard. This was also the case during this action were the DASH and the Van Amstel swiftly received permission to enter French waters.
